Nominate a Vermont Small Business of the Year

VERMONT — The Vermont District Office of the U.S. Small Business Administration is accepting nominations for its 2018 small business awards.

Previous Vermont winners include Ben and Jerry’s, Switchback Brewing Company and Mike Rainville of Middlebury’s Maple Landmark, who was 2017 Small Business Person of the Year.

Since 1963, the SBA has recognized the outstanding achievements of America’s small businesses for their contributions to their local communities, and to the nation’s economy. The award categories are:

Letter to the Editor: Mount Abe revote on thoughtful path

On Dec. 6 the Mount Abraham Union High School Renovation Committee met and dug into the upcoming bond vote. They voted to hold that on March 6, 2018, Town Meeting Day, because there is pressing work that must be done.

Panther men's hoop nets big victory

SARATOGA SPRINGS — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team posted its biggest win of the winter so far on Friday, when the Panthers, ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, defeated host No. 16 Skidmore, 91-76.

The Panthers’ victory over the 6-1 Thoroughbreds was their first over a ranked team, and it allowed them to conclude first-semester play at 6-0. Middlebury will next play on Dec. 29 vs. York at the Washington & Lee tournament.

Women's hoop splits contests

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women's basketball team split two games late last week, with the second game, a loss at Skidmore, the Panthers’ first of the season.

Middlebury wrapped up its pre-holiday stretch at 8-1, the program’s best start since 2001. The Panthers next play on Dec. 29 at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in California.

On Thursday the Panthers broke a 41-41 fourth-quarter tie in a a 56-50 victory over visiting Sage (4-3).

Editorial: State's budget woes made worse by federal tax cuts

As Congressional Republicans eagerly anticipate their proposed massive tax cuts to the nation’s richest 10 percent, Vermont is facing projected revenue shortages for the 11th year in a row. The state recently reported the projected General Fund revenue for the upcoming fiscal year at $1,591 million, which is about $34 million more than the prior year. That represents a growth of about 2 percent across all state government. Expenses are higher, however, creating an expected budget shortfall of about $45 million.

Bray suggests a per-parcel fee to fund clean water; state officials differ on payment plan

MONTPELIER — Debate in Montpelier surrounding efforts to clean up the state’s waterways has been surging like the Otter Creek in April, but legislative action on funding for those efforts has been moving at a glacial pace.

With that in mind, Sen. Chris Bray, D-New Haven, is suggesting Vermont adopt a per-parcel fee that would yield $18.8 million of the estimated $30 million the state will need to raise during each of the next 20 years as its share of a federally mandated, $2.6 billion cleanup of Lake Champlain and related waterways.

Bristol residents question need for natural gas pipeline

BRISTOL — Concerns, questions, support for and objections to the anticipated extension of the Addison Natural Gas Project pipeline to Bristol took up a good part of Monday night’s selectboard meeting.

The meeting also brought to light some townspeople’s concerns about how the selectboard has both made and communicated its Vermont Gas-related decisions.

Early in the meeting, Bristol resident Sally Burrell gave voice to some of those concerns.
