Film festival draws raves in its debut

MIDDLEBURY — If the first-ever Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival (MNFF) were to be judged by the rating scale coined by the late movie critics Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert, it would certainly earn “two thumbs up.”

Way up.

The festival, which ran last Thursday through Sunday, exceeded expectations for attendance, film submissions and the enthusiasm with which it was embraced and supported by the community, according to MNFF founder and board President Lloyd Komesar, who on Monday was already thinking ahead to next year’s edition.

Art teacher helped kids get 'hands-on' experience for 30 years

NEW HAVEN — If you’ve taken an elementary or middle school art class in Addison County in the past 30 years, or your kids have, there’s a decent chance you’ve met Michaela Granstrom.

Granstrom, 62, had been gracing Addison County’s art classrooms for three decades before she retired in June of this year.

New Haven residents might also know Michaela Granstrom though the business that she manages with her husband, Chris Granstrom, 62: Lincoln Peak Winery.

Ferrisburgh Day to include unveiling of new town garage

FERRISBURGH — This year’s Ferrisburgh Day, which will arrive on the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 12, will be doing double duty.

Not only will Ferrisburgh Day give residents of the northwest Addison County town a chance to gather and get to know each other better, it will also serve as the official unveiling of the town’s new $1.05 million, 5,940-square-foot, six-bay highway garage. That building was built next to the former town garage, on Little Chicago Road across from Ferrisburgh Central School.

ACSU outlines its educational road map for the next five years

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central Supervisory Union (ACSU) officials on Tuesday unveiled a first-ever strategic plan for Middlebury-area schools, a document that outlines expectations for student achievement during the next five years along with measurement standards to see if the plan’s goals have been met.

“It’s not just about student test scores,” ACSU Superintendent Peter Burrows said of the plan and the future of the educational system.

“It’s about the whole student.”

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts opens its 23rd season this September with a diverse and exciting array of concerts, plays, exhibitions, dance performances, films and more. Among the highlights of the 2015-2016 season are the Clifford Symposium, titled “The ‘good’ Body”; a month-long exhibition of Shakespeare’s First Folio, with related performances and celebrations; and artistic events celebrating 50 years of environmental education and leadership at Middlebury.

Dibble's work reflects loss, artist's growth

Town Hall Theater's 'Last Five Years' heads to Burlington

In the hit musical, “The Last Five Years,” her songs travel back through time to that first meeting, while he travels forward in time to the bitter break-up — a brilliant structure that lays bare the joys and frustrations of a modern relationship.

Winners of the film festival's VTeddy Awards announced

MIDDLEBURY — At Sunday’s closing ceremonies for the first annual Middlebury New Middlebury Filmmakers Festival judges presented the VTeddy Awards for films judged to have been the best in the show. Vermont Teddy Bear Co., a major sponsor of MNFF, provided specially designed bear awards for the winners.
