Middlebury Police Log: Man cited for DUI following traffic stop

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Timothy Dragon, 36, of Middlebury for driving under the influence (second offense), following a traffic stop on Route 7 South on March 15.

Police allege that Dragon’s vehicle almost struck a guardrail as it turned from Route 125 onto Route 7. Police said they measured Dragon’s blood-alcohol content at 0.206 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

Longtime local baby doctor Alan Ayer dies at 71

ADDISON — Long-time Addison County obstetrician-gynecologist Dr. Alan Ayer, who delivered well over 5,000 babies and practiced in this area more than 30 years, died suddenly on Friday, March 13. He was 71 years old.

Ayer was a native of Maine, and he received his medical degree from the University of Vermont College of Medicine. He practiced medicine for more than 40 years.

Ayer was the husband of Sen. Claire Ayer, who has represented Addison County as a Democrat in the Vermont Senate since first being elected in 2002.

North Branch students combine science and skiing in two-day trek

RIPTON — Students at many area schools go on field trips, but one recent excursion could be categorized as epic.

With temperatures well below freezing and over a foot of freshly fallen mid-winter snow, the entire student body of the North Branch School in Ripton last month made a two-day, 20-mile journey following trail networks through scenic and challenging terrain in Addison County.

Bristol man gets 10-year sentence for sexual assault

BRISTOL — A Bristol man will spend at least the next 10 years in jail in wake of a recent plea agreement on a felony aggravated sexual assault case in which he was accused of having sex multiple times with a 12-year-old family member.

Middlebury gives its support to local hydro project

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury selectboard has sent a letter to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) confirming its support for what is being called the “Middlebury Upper Hydroelectric Project,” a water turbine that would be installed near the Otter Creek Falls.

Leicester man cited for aggravated assault

LEICESTER — A Leicester man pleaded innocent on Monday in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, to a felony charge of aggravated domestic assault with a weapon, after he allegedly struck a woman on March 6 and — while brandishing a crowbar —  threatened to “bury her somewhere.”

Jason M. Kimball, 47, faces a penalty of up to 15 years in prison and/or a fine of up to $25,000 if convicted of the offense.
