NORTHFIELD — Vergennes Union High School junior Chris Castillo won the Division II boys’ long jump at Saturday’s indoor track championship meet at Norwich University to highlight the day for the Commodore team.
Castillo also placed sixth in the triple jump to score 16 of the VUHS boys’ 21 points — a score good enough to put the Commodores in seventh place among 13 D-II teams competing. Fair Haven edged Rice, 106-103, for the D-II boys’ title.

Editor’s note: This week’s sports columnist is Peter Lindholm, whose dad, Karl, usually occupies this space. Peter spent this fall with his family in Cameroon, West Africa, and is now in his first week of classes at Middlebury College. He graduated from Middlebury Union High School last spring.
Editor’s note: This is the most recent in a series of columns by members of Middlebury’s Town Offices and Recreation Facilities Steering Committee. Nancy Malcolm chairs that committee and John Dale is a senior architect at Bread Loaf Corp.
The town office/recreation facility proposal is a marriage of convenience between Middlebury College and the town of Middlebury. It is well known that marriages of this sort leave much to be desired. I have noted several major flaws in this proposal, any one of which justifies a rejection by the voters. I’m sure that others can find more reasons that warrant leaving this ill-conceived proposal at the altar.
Here are some of the flaws I found, in no particular order.
ADDISON COUNTY — A New Haven man was allegedly kidnapped by a man with whom he hoped to transact some business.
Vermont State Police received a complaint from Richard Esty, 67, of New Haven, who said he responded to a Craigslist post and arranged to meet with Jonathan Henry, 28, of Marshfield on the afternoon of Jan. 27. Esty told police that during their meeting in East Montpelier, Henry physically assaulted him, drove him to Berlin where he extorted money from him, and returned him to his vehicle.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police found more than 20 grams of marijuana in a North Pleasant Street apartment on Feb. 6. Police said they were given permission by the resident to search the home based on reports of a “chemical smell” emanating from the apartment. Police said charges are pending against the tenant for possession of marijuana with intent to distribute, and possession of a controlled substance.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
VERMONT — The Vermont Sports Media Association has picked Williamstown High School senior basketball player Jason Manwaring, Northfield High School junior hockey player Kristen Dukette and Norwich University senior rugby player Rose Bernheim as its December athletes of the month.
In statewide balloting, VSMA members elected Manwaring the Male High School Athlete of the Month, Dukette the Female High School Athlete of the Month, and Bernheim the Open Division Athlete of the Month.
