LCMM schooner to breathe life into Battle of Plattsburgh

FERRISBURGH — When the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum launched the replica canal schooner Lois McClure back in 2004, then-LCMM Director Art Cohn anticipated the majestic vessel might complete a single, triumphant sailing tour and then serve as a very important exhibit on how maritime commerce was conducted in the region during the mid- to late 1800s.

Jette fills vacancy on Middlebury school board

MIDDLEBURY — Mary Hogan Elementary School directors on May 19 appointed Middlebury resident Victoria Jette to a board vacancy created by the recent resignation of incumbent Jim Callahan.

Callahan verbally resigned from the ID-4 school board on April 17, citing a disagreement with board Chairwoman Ruth Hardy. Callahan had been elected to a three-year term on the board on March 4 and attended only two meetings before resigning.

VUHS student artist among those lauded by Welch

MONTPELIER — Rep. Peter Welch hosted the 33rd annual Congressional Art Competition for high school students at The Gallery at Vermont College of Fine Arts in Montpelier on May 15.

Greta Suzette Exeter from Vergennes, a student at Vergennes Union High School, received Congressman Welch’s choice award for her piece “Michelle Dockery.”

Vergennes schedules infrastructure efforts

UTC Aerospace earns new $6.7 million defense contract

VERGENNES — Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) has announced a new $6,723,732 Defense Department contract with UTC Aerospace Systems based in Vergennes to develop and test improved guidance systems for U.S. munitions, which would allow greater precision and avoid damage to innocent bystanders and property.

The Outside Story: Sneaky plants trick gullible ants

I don’t trust flowers.

There are grounds for my suspicion; flowering plants are proven masters of deception. For instance, the sundew uses sparkling droplets of sticky “faux dew” to ensnare and digest curious flies; bee orchids dupe male wasps into wasting their copulatory efforts on floral structures that look and smell like a female wasp. And what about humans? As I labor on behalf of flowers, fertilizing, tilling, watering and sweating, I sometimes wonder if I’m being led down the proverbial garden path. Exactly who’s cultivating whom?

Aines tosses second no-hitter in 3-1 Otter Valley victory

MUHS baseball defeats MVU, pushes team to 7-5 record

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School baseball team defeated visiting Missisquoi on Thursday, 7-5, and in the process the Tigers clinched their winningest season in at least five years and showed how they have done so.

The Tigers fought back after falling behind early, got key contributions from up and down the batting order, and made a critical defensive play.
