VUHS tops Eagles in boys' basketball

ADDISON COUNTY — Vergennes defeated rival Mount Abraham to highlight local high school boys’ basketball action in the latter half of last week. In other games, VUHS, Otter Valley and Middlebury all came up short.

On Wednesday, the Commodores outlasted the host Eagles, 62-46. Mount Abe hung with the Commodores through three quarters, trailing by only three points, but VUHS outscored Mount Abe by 26-13 in the final eight minutes and pulled away.

Tiger girls stem Spaulding hockey

BARRE — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ hockey team eased past host Spaulding on Saturday, outshooting the Crimson Tide, 28-9, in a 5-1 victory.

The Tigers won their sixth straight and improved to 9-2-1 heading into a 7 p.m. Monday night home game vs. Lake Placid, N.Y., and a Saturday game at South Burlington. Spaulding (5-4) suffered its fourth straight loss after a 5-0 start.

Tiger boys' hockey loses on road

EAST MONTPELIER — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team dropped its first games to Vermont teams last week, both to Division II rivals on the road. MUHS stands at 7-3-1 heading into its next game, on the road at St. Johnsbury on Saturday.

On this past Wednesday, host Burr & Burton blanked the Tigers, 2-0, as Bulldog goalie Jeremy Fleming made 16 saves and Sam Cottrell scored twice.

Opinion: Vermont Gas Systems not worthy of PSB approval

During this festive holiday season I had the displeasure of attending a most distressing meeting. It was a condemnation/easement rights hearing on a neighbor’s property. What a holiday gift for them. This was occurring not because they were delinquent on their taxes or a seizure for some crime, but because they refused to give the right of passage through their property to Vermont Gas for a gas transmission pipeline.

Systems reliability at issue in New Haven's PSB hearing this week

NEW HAVEN — The Public Service Board on Tuesday will hear from both the town of New Haven and Green Mountain Power, as to whether local power distribution lines are adequate to handle a 350 kW solar array proposed to be built next to the Vermont State Police barracks in New Haven.

The proposed solar array, called SSE New Haven Solar II, would be built next to a 150 kW solar array already in operation in the same location. The developer applied for permission to build the new array in March 2015.

Community Forum: VTrans to work with town on railroad bridges

Replacing the aging bridges on Main Street and Merchants Row coupled with the reconstruction of the rail bed nestled in the vibrant and historic Middlebury village makes for a challenging public works endeavor. This project will cause temporary impacts to downtown; the selectboard and VTrans have been and continue to examine opportunities to design and construct this project in a manner that will complete the work with the least possible impact to residents and businesses.
