There’s an old story about the Vermont farmer who had his farm in the Connecticut River Valley.
Over the years, the river had changed course several times and eventually, out-of-state surveyors were hired to determine exactly where the state line was.
When their work was completed, it fell to one of the surveyors to tell the old Vermont farmer that his land was in fact not in Vermont, but was actually in New Hampshire.
“I’m mighty glad to hear that!” the farmer said.
WHITING — Whiting residents will gather at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, to decide on town and elementary school spending proposals and choose a dozen officers, most notably a selectboard member and an elementary school director, each for three-year terms.
WEYBRIDGE — Weybridge residents at their town meeting will be asked to approve some charter changes that would allow the local selectboard to appoint its town clerk, treasurer, road commissioner and assistant road commissioner currently they are elected by residents. This means that the person or people taking these positions would no longer have to reside in the town of Weybridge; they would be appointed and receive an hourly wage.
WALTHAM — Waltham residents will gather on Monday to decide from the floor of town meeting financial and other issues and choose town officers, and then will vote on Tuesday on school spending.
At issue beginning at 6 p.m. in Waltham Town Hall on March 2 will be the selectboard’s proposal for $91,387 of general fund administrative spending and $133,825 of road spending.
VERGENNES — The Vergennes Town Meeting Day ballot will offer two contested races, including a rematch of a 2012 contest decided by one vote, and a petitioned article.
The annual city meeting, at which issues will be discussed, but not decided, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, March 2, in the Vergennes Opera House. The city’s annual dessert social will begin in the theater an hour earlier.
Voting will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 3, at the city fire station.
STARKSBORO — Residents in Starksboro will convene on Saturday, Feb. 28, at 9 a.m. for the annual town and school meeting, during which they will consider 12 articles.
Voters will elect town officials and decide school budgets by Australian ballot on March 3. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the elementary school.
SHOREHAM — Shoreham residents at their town meeting next week will be asked if they’d like to sell an unused, 6-acre piece of town-owned land and use the proceeds for future community projects.
