VERGENNES — In a busy week between June 2 and June 8 for Vergennes police, Wednesday, June 4 stood out. Ten incidents that day began at 6 a.m. with a call about a vandalized hammer and ended hours later with a complaint that one dog had bitten another.

On that Wednesday, police first heard at 6 a.m. from a North Green Street man who alleged that his ex-girlfriend had vandalized his hammer by bending it.

Next, a parent of a middle school student reported that she had recently had to take her child to Porter Hospital after what she said was an apparent overdose of marijuana. City police said they determined the drug had been consumed at a Ferrisburgh home and that other juveniles were involved, and they referred the case to Vermont State Police and the Department of Children and Families.

Soon afterward, Vergennes Union High School officials alerted Vergennes police that a juvenile was refusing to attend school. Police picked him up, talked to him and took him to school.

Then police heard an accusation from a man that his girlfriend’s ex-boyfriend was stalking him. Police said the ex-boyfriend denied the allegation, but the officer referred the complainant to court to obtain an anti-stalking order.

Police then began investigating a complaint that someone had posed as an elderly woman’s nephew and asked for money, a crime reported by the woman’s son.

Next, police referred to VSP a report that a home on Basin Harbor Road in Ferrisburgh had suspicious plants in its yard.

Police then made the first of two visits to a Main Street apartment building. First they responded to a report of a drunken man outside on the sidewalk. A woman there said she and a friend would look after the man. Later, they were called to an apartment in the building by its resident, who said when he returned he found acquaintances, the two men and the woman police dealt with earlier, involved in what he believed was a sexual assault. The woman told police, however, the activity was consensual. The resident asked police to remove all three from the apartment, and two, one of the men and the woman, were taken to the Marble Valley Correctional Center to sober up.

Police also went that Wednesday to a North Green Street apartment building and calmed two neighbors arguing about loud music, and then investigated vandalism at Vergennes Union Elementary School, where a pickup truck had damaged the rear lawn.

Finally, they heard from a woman who had been walking her dog that one of two other dogs being walked had bolted from their owner and bitten her dog on its underside; police said they are still working on that case.

In other incidents between June 2 and 8, Vergennes police conducted a number of foot patrols in what Police Chief George Merkel said were trouble spots, and also:

•  On June 2 cited Northlands Job Corps student Tyler Demag, 19, of Addison for simple assault for allegedly punching a female student.

•  On June 2 checked out a report of a man crawling through the window of a Second Street home; police learned it was the homeowner.

•  On June 2 issued court diversion paperwork to a Bristol pedestrian for possession of alcohol by a minor, an action taken while off duty in that town.

•  On June 3 called the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to help a man they saw outside a Main Street apartment building with a bandage over his eye; VARS took him to Porter Hospital.

•  On June 3 spoke with a city resident living with her estranged husband. Police issued a relief-from-abuse order and advised her to contact WomenSafe. On June 6 the woman alleged that the man had sexually assaulted her, and police referred the case to the county’s sexual assault investigation unit.

•  On June 3 went to Ferrisburgh to help VSP with a reported fight on Button Bay Lane.

•  On June 5 checked the welfare of a West Main Street man reported to be feeling suicidal and determined he was OK.

•  On June 5 helped VARS at a Hillside Acres apartment.

•  On June 6 responded along with VARS to help a VUES student experiencing emotional issues.

•  On June 6 heard from a Main Street resident that he was not being allowed to retrieve personal property, but learned there was a dispute about its ownership and referred the parties to court.

•  On June 6 helped VSP by looking for a woman at the City Limits bar, but did not find her.

•  On June 7 directed traffic around a tractor-trailer truck that was disabled on Main Street near the bridge.

•  On June 7 issued court diversion paperwork to an underage Northlands student for an alcohol offense.

•  On June 8 helped VARS on Green Street with a man experiencing mental distress; VARS took him to Porter Hospital.

•  On June 8 calmed a man and a woman fighting at a Main Street apartment building and arrested the man on an outstanding warrant. Police lodged Jake Desjadon, 27, of Vergennes at the Chittenden County Correctional Center.

•  On June 8 looked for a dog reported running loose on Main Street, but did not find it.

•  On June 8 cited Christopher Burnett, 37, of Colchester for possession of marijuana and ticketed him for possession of drug paraphernalia after responding to a report of people littering and smoking pot at a city canoe portage.
