VERGENNES — Vergennes police on Dec. 7 arrested a 48-year-old city resident on a felony charge of selling heroin, an arrest Police Chief George Merkel said was made following an investigation.

Charged was Kelly Ann McEvoy. She was lodged in the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility. Police said also cited McEvoy for three outstanding warrants for failure to appear in Addison County court.

Between Dec. 3 and 9 city police also continued to crack down on violators of the Vergennes wintertime ban on overnight parking on city streets, issuing three tickets on Dec. 7, 11 on Dec. 8, and four on Dec. 9.

Police also operated another nine special directed patrols designed to deter speeding within city limits. In patrols during those seven days operated on West Main, North Main, School and Green streets and on Panton and Monkton roads police issued 20 tickets and a number of warnings, mostly for speeding but also for other traffic offenses. Those patrols are in addition to routine traffic enforcement, according to Merkel.

In other incidents between Dec. 3 and 9, Vergennes police:

On Dec. 3:

•  Dealt with an accident in which a pedestrian was struck, but not at all seriously injured, by a vehicle on West Main Street.

•  After receiving an anonymous tip from someone who had seen the individual’s name on a TV segment, arrested Hunter W. Sweeney, 21, of Montgomery, a Northlands Job Corps student, on an outstanding warrant for failing to appear in a Franklin County court.

On Dec. 4 performed a routine background check on behalf of the U.S. Army.

On Dec. 5 discussed with school administrators a parental concern of middle school students harming themselves; police were assured the students involved were receiving counseling.

On Dec. 6 calmed an upset and confused elderly woman at an East Street residence.

On Dec. 7:

•  Dealt with a two-car accident on Main Street.

•  Checked the welfare of a bank customer on behalf of a bank employee and determined the individual was OK.

•  Advised a man receiving harassing calls from a blocked number that the best suggestion they could make was to block the number in question.

On Dec. 8:

•  Backed up firefighters at the Feed Commodities fire on Meigs Road.

•  Responded along the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad to an untimely death in Waltham.

•  Went to the Small City Market to help with an angry customer; the man, upset about an uncooperative coffee pot, had agreed to pay and leave before police arrived.

•  Helped Vermont State Police by responding to a complaint from a Satterly Road resident in Ferrisburgh who said a gunshot had landed nearby; police found no problem.

•  Checked a noise complaint at Alden Place, but found no problem.

On Dec. 9 cited Paul H. Raymond, 39, for driving under the influence of alcohol after stopping him for allegedly driving 20 mph higher than the West Main Street speed limit. Police allege Raymond’s evidentiary blood-alcohol test read at 0.187; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.
