MIDDLEBURY —Middlebury police launched an investigation into an alleged embezzlement case at Middlebury Regional EMS on March 13. Police said the case involves a “large sum of money” related to an event the organization held back in 2016.

The Independent will offer more details on this investigation as they become public.

This is the second embezzlement case in recent months involving Middlebury Regional EMS as the victim.

As reported by the Independent this past January, former Middlebury Regional EMS Co-director Lisa Northup pleaded innocent to four felony charges of embezzlement, stemming from allegations that she stole a combined total of $7,802 from the nonprofit over more than a year to pay for personal items, gifts for friends and her own medical expenses.

The non-profit Middlebury Regional EMS provides around-the-clock medical, rescue and ambulance services to residents in 11 Addison County communities.

In other recent action, Middlebury police:

•  Looked into four reports of students having attendance issues at Middlebury schools on March 6 and referred them to the Office of Balanced & Restorative Justice at the Department for Children and Families.

•  Received a March 9 call reporting a person in a hunting jacket and black hat carrying a rifle in the South Pleasant Street area. Police checked the area and did not locate a rifle, but did see a man fitting the description and carrying fishing a pole.

•  Looked into the March 11 report that a cell phone was stolen from Maplefields on North Pleasant Street; investigation continues.

•  Seized a small amount of marijuana found on Main Street on March 12.

•  Cited Ethan Newton, 26, of Pittsford for retail theft, in connection with an alleged incident at the Hannaford Supermarket on March 12.

•  Responded to a disorderly conduct report at Middlebury Union High School on March 12. Police said a student had yelled and slammed a door in the school’s administrative office.

•  Received a report about a potential theft from the Olympia Sports store in The Centre shopping plaza on March 13. An investigation revealed property has been taken from the store — and then returned, according to police.

•  Responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a Halladay Road home on March 13.

•  Ticketed multiple vehicles on College Street parked in violation of the winter parking ban on March 13.

•  Helped a driver who had slipped off Seminary Street Extension on March 14.

•  Investigated a reported domestic disturbance at a Weybridge Street home on March 14.

•  Helped a person who was having a mental health crisis in the Route 7 South area on March 14.

•  Helped Vermont State Police locate a local man who had been reported missing on March 15.

•  Notified the parents of a student who had been waiting at a bus stop on Jayne Court, not realizing there was a two-hour delay for the start of school on March 15.

•  Investigated an alleged domestic disturbance at a Halladay Road residence on March 15. Police said a drunken woman at the address was taken to a friend’s house for the night.

•  Assisted state police with a combative man at Porter Hospital on March 15.

 •Helped state police at the scene of a burglary off Route 7 on March 15.

•  Took a suicidal man to Porter Hospital to receive treatment and assistance on March 16.

•  Cited Anthony Rochon, 26, of Bristol for driving under the influence, following a traffic stop on Washington Street on March 16. Police said Rochon refuse a breath test.

•  Received a report about a South Pleasant Street apartment tenant playing loud music on March 17.

•  Cited Griffin Condon, 35, of Middlebury for retail theft and resisting arrest after he allegedly stole some items from the Tenneybrook/Dunkin Donuts store on Court Street on March 17.

•  Helped Middlebury Regional EMS locate a local man who was reportedly having suicidal thoughts on March 17. Police said the man was taken to Porter Hospital.

•  Served no-trespass orders on March 17 on two women, one for a Lantern Lane address and another for a South Street location.

•  Helped Middlebury Regional EMS with a man who was having difficulty breathing on North Pleasant Street on March 17.

•  Helped Middlebury College Public Safety with a report of someone driving erratically on campus on March 18.

•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with an infant who was having difficulty breathing in the Case Street area on March 18.

•  Responded to a two-car accident, with no injuries, on College Street on March 18.

•  Ticketed vehicles parked in violation of the winter parking ban on College Street and Bakery Lane on March 18.
