VERGENNES — In the past two weeks Vergennes police were involved in one arrest of a city man, and they cracked an embezzlement case.

On Oct. 19 Vermont State Police on behalf of Vergennes police arrested a Vergennes man following two complaints that he violated his conditions of release.

Police lodged Russell Hulst, 57, at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility after troopers arrested him in New Haven Junction when he showed up at an unrelated incident.

Vergennes police said they had received calls on Oct. 10 and 16 from a woman they described as Hulst’s former girlfriend, who complained that Hulst violated conditions related to her.

In a separate case, on Oct. 12 Vergennes police cited First Street resident Karen Lee Norton for embezzlement after investigating a $1,164 cash shortage at her place of employment, the Maverick gas station on Main Street. Norton was cited and released.

Between Oct. 9 and 22 Vergennes police also conducted a number of patrols in response to complaints about speeding along various city streets, and:

•  On Oct. 10 checked the welfare of a Booth Woods resident, who was OK.

•  On Oct. 10 heard from a Green Street apartment resident that someone was knocking on their windows and doors; although a witness saw a man in the area, police could not find him.

•  On Oct. 10 issued a no-trespass order to a student who had been terminated from the Northlands Job Corps program and was refusing to leave; later in the day police discovered him camping out near the Otter Creek falls and told him to move along.

•  On Oct. 10 took a report that a tractor-trailer truck had rear-ended another vehicle on West Main Street and then driven off.

•  On Oct. 10 calmed a verbal dispute on South Maple Street.

•  On Oct. 11 helped a motorist enter a locked car on Armory Lane.

•  On Oct. 11 were told a wallet had been stolen from a purse left outside a local eatery.

•  On Oct. 11 took a report of a suspicious sales call at a South Maple Street home.

•  On Oct. 13 directed traffic around a disabled tractor-trailer truck on Main Street.

•  On Oct. 13 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad on First Street.

•  On Oct. 13 helped a motorist enter a locked car at Shaw’s Supermarket.

•  On Oct. 14 returned a driver’s license that had been found to its Ferrisburgh owner.

•  On Oct. 14 went to Valley Vista at 1 Alden Place to make sure all was OK while staff dealt with a distraught resident.

•  On Oct. 14 went to the Bixby Library and picked up and disposed of a hypodermic needle that had been found in a bathroom there.

•  On Oct. 14 advised a parent involved in a custody dispute to go to Family Court.

•  On Oct. 14 accepted a wallet found by two cyclists and attempted to contact its owner.

•  On Oct. 15 ordered towed a car parked in the Green Street bus stop.

•  On Oct. 15 helped a Short Street resident get out of her locked basement.

•  On Oct. 15 advised tenants on North Green Street involved in a dispute to contact their landlord.

•  On Oct. 17 helped a motorist enter a locked car at Vergennes Union Elementary School.

•  On Oct. 17 dealt with a minor two-car crash at the intersection of Short and Green streets.

•  On Oct. 18 dealt with a minor two-car crash at the intersection of Main Street and Panton Road.

•  On Oct. 18 were told a key in a real estate broker’s lockbox at a South Maple Street home had been stolen.

•  On Oct. 18 cited Rikki C. Brunell, 28, of Panton for driving under the influence of alcohol at a Route 7 traffic stop in Waltham.

•  On Oct. 20 looked into the theft of gym and mountain bike bags from a car parked on East Street.

•  On Oct. 21 accepted a key found on Main Street.

• On Oct. 21 helped Bristol police with a driving under the influence case in Bristol.
