VERGENNES — Allegations of assaults, car accidents and motorists locked out of their cars were among the calls that kept Vergennes police busy between May 31 and June 5.

In that week, city police:

•  On May 30 handled crowd and traffic control duties for the annual Vergennes Memorial Day parade.

•  On May 30 heard a complaint from a Green Street apartment building manager about unwanted visitors, but told the manager that if the people were guests of the residents that it was a civil issue between the manager and the tenants.

•  On May 30 conducted a grant-funded Click-It or Ticket detail in the Bristol area.

•  On May 30 cited Matthew Montgomery, 22, of Vergennes for simple assault for allegedly repeatedly punching a family member at a Short Street residence, causing minor injury.

•  On May 30 were informed by the mother of a Northlands Job Corps student that her son and another student had been involved in a back-and-forth assault case a week before: One allegedly hit the other with a belt, and the other responded by throwing feces at the other while he was in the shower. Police forwarded statements to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

•  On May 31, acting on a tip from a Burlington teen center operator, investigated an allegation that a teen had been struck the day before by another teen while staying at a South Maple Street residence. Again, police forwarded statements, this time conflicting, to the Addison County State’s Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

•  On May 31 dealt with a complaint from a local business manager that a customer’s son had threatened him during a dispute over a transaction; police calmed both parties and told them to complete the transaction, and suggested the customers take their business elsewhere in the future.

•  On May 31 helped two motorists get into their locked cars outside of Shaw’s Supermarket and Kinney Drug Store.

•  On May 31, at the request of Middlebury police, searched a Main Street apartment for a stolen laptop, which they did not find.

•  On May 31 checked a complaint that a dog had been left in a locked car at Shaw’s in the heat; the car was gone when police arrived.

•  On May 31 called the dog warden to check a complaint of a loose dog on Main Street.

•  On June 1 helped Vermont State Police by responding to an accident on Route 22A in Panton.

• On June 1 were asked by Dundon’s Plumbing to keep an eye on the portable toilet near the city recycling center, which the company said had been tipped over several times recently.

•  On June 1 heard from a citizen who reported an attempted scam from a caller pretending to be an IRS agent and who sought personal data.

•  On June 1 took a report of a minor two-car accident on Main Street.

•  On June 2 were told that a woman was acting strangely at the intersection of South Maple and School streets, including trying to jump in front of a car; she was gone when police arrived.

•  On June 2 called a friend to come pick up a woman with a mental disorder who was harassing another woman who was fishing and who refused to give her cigarettes, including by pulling down her pants and mooning the angler.

•  On June 2 tried unsuccessfully to find a drunken man who was harassing the owner of the Main Street liquor store after the owner refused to sell him alcohol.

•  On June 3 conducted a grant-funded Click-It or Ticket detail in the Vergennes area.

•  On June 3 helped a motorist get into a locked car outside of Vergennes Union High School.

•  On June 3 ticketed a driver for passing a stopped school bus and for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

•  On June 3 checked a report of the smell of marijuana in a Main Street apartment building, but could not detect it.

•  On June 3 searched unsuccessfully for a car that was reported to be driven erratically on Monkton Road.

•  On June 4 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with a possible prescription drug overdose on Church Street.

•  On June 4 went to Shaw’s to check a report of a dog left in a car, but found the car with a window down and the dog in no danger. Police warned the owner to be careful.
