The Addison Independent is proud to publish the Students of the Week from area High Schools each week. The students are chosen by teachers and administration from each school who would like to recognize their exceptional engagement in the high schools they attend.

MUHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Middlebury Union High School is very pleased to recognize Katina Boise as its Student of the Week. Katina lives in Middlebury with her parents, Brad and Amy Boise.
Katina has achieved High Honors throughout her time here and was elected to National Honor Society. She is also a Peer Leader. Along with an honors psychology course, Katina is currently taking or has completed AP Biology, Calculus, French and Statistics. Achievement only begins in the classroom and lab for Katina. She has played flute in school bands since 2008. She played field hockey in ninth and 10th grades, and has been active with our Student Coalition on Human Rights (SCOHR) in grades 11 and 12.
Outside of school, Katina has been a Girl Scout since 2003, and over the years has received various leadership & community service awards. 2003 also marked the formal beginning of Katina’s career as an equestrienne. A former barrel racer, she now competes in jumping and eventing. It seems the “neighs” have it for Katina, as her passion for things equine have also led her to success in state and regional hippology contests.
As with Girl Scouts, what shines through beyond participation and competition is leadership. Katina has been president of her 4H club since 2012 and has been selected for a leadership conference in Rhode Island each of the last two years. She was also a leader and volunteer at Green Mountain Day Camp from 2012-2014.

Katina volunteers at various horse shows in the region, and she helps out at the Middlebury Community Suppers. Yet Katina somehow still finds time to work at both a local law firm and an auto parts store.
Katina has traveled extensively throughout North and Central America. Come August she’ll be saddling up again — this time for a long ride to Orange, Calif. There, at Chapman University, she plans to work toward her goal of being both a self-employed veterinarian and a volunteer with Veterinarians Without Borders.
Geographically, you may be riding off into the sunset, Katina, but we see your future as sunrise bright, and we wish you all the best on the trail ahead!

VUHS STUDENT OF THE WEEK

Vergennes Union High School is pleased to recognize Bradley Sturtevant as its Student of the Week. Bradley lives in Panton with his guardians, Tim and Robin Warner. He has three older siblings: Jason Sturtevant, Devin Moulton and Brittany Warner.

Bradley’s grades have steadily improved over the past four years at Vergennes. Since freshman year Bradley has been on honor roll and high honors multiple times. A class that he found particularly challenging and pushing him outside his comfort zone was Modern Expression. In this course you learn how to properly prepare a speech and deliver it in front of an audience. After doing his final speech he realized “that speaking out in front of other people isn’t a big deal.”

Bradley has been an active member of several of our sports teams. He has played football, basketball and lacrosse. He was named varsity captain for both basketball and lacrosse. He received the Most Valuable Player award for lacrosse last year and this year was named Defensive Lineman of the Year. Bradley has helped out with multiple fundraisers for sports teams and has been helping out young lacrosse players at Mount Abraham Union High School.

Bradley gives this encouragement to other VUHS students: “One piece of advice I have after looking back on my high school career is don’t be afraid to go outside your comfort zone.”

Sarah Thompson, a science teacher at VUHS, said, “Bradley is a truly amazing person; he is compassionate, hard-working and reflective. Every moment I have spent with Bradley has made me a better person because he has shown me how to be strong when a lesser person would break. Bradley has worked hard to be a good student, athlete and school community member. He is incredibly deserving of this honor!”

Following graduation from VUHS, Bradley will be studying athletic training at Plymouth State University. The faculty, staff and students of VUHS wish Bradley the very best in the future.
