PLATTSBURGH — The Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team picked up a pair of road wins in recent action, an overtime decision in a Saturday NESCAC contest, and a non-league victory at Plattsburgh on Tuesday. Middlebury improved to 4-2 heading into a game at NESCAC foe Bowdoin on Saturday and are now ranked No. 9 in NCAA Division III.

On this past Saturday, Panther Jack Gould scored a man-up goal 50 seconds into overtime as Middlebury earned a 9-8 win at Wesleyan (3-2, 1-2 NESCAC). 

Middlebury took a 3-0 lead after one period, on goals by Cedric Rhodes, Sean Carroll and Gould. Jon Broome assisted the first two markers.

The teams exchanged goals in the second quarter, and Middlebury maintained its three-goal edge at the half, 6-3. Joey Zelkowitz, Jack Cleary and Henry Riehl (13 seconds before intermission) scored for the Panthers.

Wesleyan cut the lead to 6-5 in the third, but late goals by Riehl and Gould made it 8-5 entering the fourth quarter.

Wesleyan’s Harry Stanton scored three times in the final 15 minutes to tie the score; he finished with four goals. In the final minute the Cardinals possessed, but Panther Jack DeFrino caused a turnover and teammate Dylan Fowler collected the ground ball. Wesleyan fouled the Panthers trying to get the ball back with five seconds left in regulation, giving Middlebury the man-up chance in overtime.

In overtime, the Panthers worked the ball on the perimeter until Gould whipped a shot from 20-yards out that got under Cardinal goalie Ted Bergman (nine saves) The game-winning tally came 50 seconds into overtime and with five ticks left on the man-advantage.

Gould led the Panthers with three goals, and Broome had a game-high three assists. John Jackson won 13 of 20 faceoffs and had six ground balls, while Zelkowitz led all players with seven ground balls. Panther goalie Will Ernst made eight saves, and Middlebury held a 39-28 advantage in shots at goal.

On Tuesday, Gould again scored three times as the Panthers edged Plattsburgh, 10-8, dropping the Cardinals to 3-3. Middlebury played its fourth straight game decided by two or fewer goals, two in overtime.

Middlebury led for most of the game, saw the Cardinals rally to tie the score twice in the second half, including at 8-8 at 7:15 of the fourth quarter, but got game-winning and insurance goals down the stretch from Tim Giarrusso and Broome, respectively.

Gould tallied all three of his goals in the first period as the Panthers took a 4-1 lead. Middlebury maintained that margin at the break, leading by 6-3. Plattsburgh ran off the first three goals of the second half to make it 6-6, but Giarrusso and Kyle Soroka tallied for Middlebury to make it 8-6 with 10:52 left in the game.

After Plattsburgh tallied twice in the next 3:37, Giarrusso snapped the tie at 5:36, and Broome (who also assisted two scores) tacked on the pad goal at 3:17.

Plattsburgh goalie Matt Massaria finished with seven saves, while Ernst made six saves for Middlebury. The Cardinals owned a 35-30 shot advantage (35-30), while the Panthers owned a 38-23 edge in ground balls. Eight Cardinals tallied a goal apiece.
