VERMONT — A Forest Dale man was killed when he was thrown from the car he was driving after it crashed in Sudbury this past Saturday evening.

Vermont State Police responded to a one-car crash at the intersection of Routes 30 and 73 in Sudbury on Oct. 17 at around 9:54 p.m. Their preliminary investigation suggested that 20-year-old Jakob P. Mulcahy of Forest Dale was driving a 2006 Honda Civic southbound on Route 30 when he lost control of the vehicle and it left the western side of the roadway, overturned several times and came to rest in a field.

Mulcahy was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle. He was transported to the Rutland Regional Medical Center but died from his injuries.

Mulcahy, the  son of Karla Rantanen and Patrick Mulcahy, was a 2013 graduate of Otter Valley Union High School, and he worked for Lake Region Landscaping in Hubbardton. See an obituary on Page 6A.

Two passengers — Jacob D. Mitchell and Sean P. Armstrong, both 20 and from Ludlow — were also transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center. Police said it appears that Mitchell was seat-belted but was also ejected from the vehicle while Armstrong wore a seat belt and remained inside the vehicle. Mitchell reportedly suffered a fractured neck, fractured lower back, fractured sternum and lacerations to his right arm. Armstrong was treated for minor cuts to his right hand and arm and released from the hospital.

The vehicle’s speed appears to be a contributing factor in this crash, police said.

The Brandon Area Rescue Squad, Whiting Fire Department and EMS and Regional Ambulance Service also assisted with this incident. The Vermont State Police Crash Reconstruction Team responded to the scene to conduct an investigation as to the cause of the crash.

This crash is still under investigation; anyone with information is asked to contact the Vermont State Police at 802-773-9101.

In other recent activity, Vermont State Police:

• On Oct. 12 reported that troopers are investigating a burglary on Conway Road in Starksboro. Numerous hunting items were reported stolen, including a 45-caliber muzzle loader and a 50-caliber CVA muzzle loader. Anybody with any information on this crime is asked to contact the New Haven state police barracks at 802-388-4919.

• On Oct. 13 at 5:25 p.m. stopped a vehicle driven on Route 22A in Orwell by Michelle Bowen, 34, of Orwell, and cited her for driving with a criminally suspended license.

• On Oct. 19 responded to a two-vehicle crash in which a Middlebury woman was injured. At around 12:30 p.m. on Monday, police report 56-year-old Karen Buffman of Middlebury was delivering mail and was stationary at a mailbox on Route 7 in Mount Tabor. Pedro Lobo, 41, of Brockton, Mass., was driving a company delivery van on Route 7 when, police say, he was distracted by talking on his cell phone, crossed the centerline and went head-on into Buffman’s 2008 Jeep. Buffman was transported to Rutland Regional Medical Center where she was treated for several broken ribs and lacerations to her right arm and knee and later released. The trooper noted that she was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the collision, which prevented her from being ejected from her vehicle.

Lobo was ticketed for talking on a cell phone while driving, which carries 4 points on his insurance (due to accident resulting) and a fine of $479.

Lobo’s 2013 Dodge van sustained damage to its front bumper, and the front, driver’s side tire was removed due to damage. Buffman’s Jeep sustained damage to its front bumper, hood and front wheel.
