ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police stopped a motor vehicle driven by Walter H. Koshell, 24, of Mount Vernon, N.Y., on Route 7 in Ferrisburgh after a complaint was called in for erratic driving.

Police said their investigation showed that Koshel was operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol. Koshel provided a preliminary sample of his breath and his blood alcohol content was measured at 0.105 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08 percent.

The trooper took Koshel into custody and transported him to the New Haven VSO barracks. After citing him for driving under the influence and given a court date of July 6, Koshel was released.

In other recent activity, state police:

•  Directed traffic around a tractor-trailer crash in Orwell on Route 22A south of Route 73 on June 16 at a little after 10 p.m. Route 22A was closed for around three-quarters of an hour.

•  On June 17 at approximately 5:50 p.m. responded to Greenbush Road in Ferrisburgh, where police said Holly Gonyeau, 36, of Ferrisburgh, who was driving a 2013 Chevy Cruz, struck and killed bicyclist Kenneth Najarian, 60, of Charlotte. Najarian died at the scene as a result of the injuries sustained from the crash. Gonyeau provided a preliminary breath test indicating a blood alcohol content of 0.123 percent. Troopers cited Gonyeau for driving under the influence and released her. She is due to answer the charge in Addison Superior Court, criminal division, on June 29.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with information relating to this crash or who may have witnessed it is asked to contact Trooper Brett Flansburg at the New Haven state police barracks at 802-388-4919.

•  On June 18 responded to the Marble Valley Regional Correctional Facility in Rutland and cited 34-year-old inmate Ryan Phelps of Middlebury for tampering with facilities (tampering with fire alarm apparatus) and unlawful mischief. Correctional staff reported that on June 16  at approximately 4 p.m., the fire alarm at the facility was activated and the Rutland City Fire Department responded. No fire or smoke was located in the facility, and no one was injured.

It was determined that inmate Phelps had tampered with the sensor from his cell ceiling, causing the alarm to go off (correctional staff said that inmates have tried to conceal contraband in the sensors in the past). A maintenance worker responded to the facility and replaced the sensor.

•  On June 18 responded, with the Granville Fire Department and White River Valley Ambulance, responded to a single-vehicle crash on Route 100 in Granville. Harley Maxwell, 37, of Rochester told police that he was driving a 2013 Chevy Silverado pickup northbound on Route 100 in Granville when he attempted to avoid hitting a deer, and the pickup swerved and collided with guardrails, subsequently breaking the guardrails. The vehicle went through the guardrails and travelled several hundred feet before colliding with a tree. Both Maxwell and his juvenile passenger were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries — both were wearing seat belts. The Silverado was considered a total loss.

•  On June 19 at approximately 9:41 p.m. received a call about a motor vehicle crashing into a deer on Route 116 in the area of Mountain View Drive in Starksboro. State police responded to the scene with Starksboro fire and rescue personnel. Earl Katon, 40, of St. Albans told police that he was driving a 2013 Chevy Malibu southbound on Route 116 when a deer ran out in front of him. Katon sustained minor injuries and was checked over by Starksboro rescue personnel, but he declined transport to a medical facility. The car sustained front-end damage.

•  On June 22 at 5:48 p.m. responded to Harvey Road in Bristol for a reported family fight. Police reported that 53-year-old Ronald Berry of Bristol pointed a loaded firearm at a family member and later discharged it in an unsafe direction. Police further alleged that Berry later physically assaulted a family member causing minor injuries. Troopers took Berry into custody, cited him for aggravated domestic assault and reckless endangerment with a firearm, and lodged him at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility for lack of $10,000 bail.
