VERGENNES — Vergennes police on this past Saturday arrested Ricky D. Putnam, 44, of Addison and charged him with robbing the Vermont Federal Credit Union on Friday and with robbing People’s United Bank downtown on March 13 (see full story in A section).

On Friday, March 27, before the bank robbery, city police arrested four young men and three juvenile females in connection with a series of March 26 break-ins at homes on Sleepy Hollow Lane in Ferrisburgh. A story in Monday’s Addison Independent incorrectly stated that Vermont State Police had made the arrests. Police were investigating to see if these suspects were also involved in a case in which late on March 25 storefront and vehicle windows in Ferrisburgh, Vergennes and Addison were shot, apparently by a pellet gun.

In a week during which Vergennes police made these major arrests, they also handled a number of other incidents between March 23 and 29.

During that seven-day span, Vergennes police:

•  On March 23 worked with Vergennes Union High School personnel to help a student experiencing emotional issues.

•  On March 23 spoke to one Walker Avenue landlord about illegal Dumpster use by some tenants of another Walker Avenue landlord.

•  On March 23 checked out a motorist behind the Bixby Library slumped over his seat and discovered he was using a laptop computer.

•  On March 23 responded to VUHS when a container of pepper spray was accidentally discharged in a hallway; the student involved took responsibility for the mistake and apologized.

•  On March 23 went to a city business to check the welfare of an employee, who was not there but later determined to be OK.

•  On March 23 discovered a van reported to be suspicious on Panton Road was being operated by vacuum cleaner salespeople.

•  On March 24 checked in on a West Street family situation on behalf of the Department of Children and Families.

•  On March 25 helped Middlebury police with a commercial vehicle enforcement case.

•  On March 25 began investigating the case of a lawn tractor stolen from Alden Place.

•  On March 26 returned to Northlands Job Corps two students who had left the campus without permission; police picked them up on Topaz Lane in Ferrisburgh.

•  On March 26 cited Allyson G. Demaggio, 48, of Burlington for driving with a civilly suspended license and for speeding after stopping her vehicle for travelling 50 mph in a 30 mph West Main Street zone.

•  On March 27 took a report from an Otter View apartment resident that she was receiving harassing phone calls.

•  On March 27 checked out a suspicious car at a Panton Road storage unit business, but found no problem.

•  On March 28 ticketed a driver for traveling 55 mph in a 30 mph West Main Street zone.

•  On March 28 were told an elderly woman had left a Crosby Court home and was missing, but learned later she had returned.

•  On March 28 dealt with a complaint that a member of a problematic group of City Limits patrons had displayed a firearm and threatened to shoot an employee when asked to leave; police said they are still investigating this incident.

•  On March 29 handled a minor two-car accident at the intersection of Main Street and MacDonough Drive.
