Chalk prevailed for the four local high school soccer teams that saw first-round action on Wednesday, as the No 2 Middlebury and No. 3 Mount Abraham girls advanced in Division II, while the No. 14 Vergennes girls lost to the Eagles, and in D-I boys’ action No. 1 South Burlington ousted No. 16 Middlebury.

Both the Tiger and Eagle girls will host quarterfinals on Saturday. The 10-3-2 Tigers will entertain No. 7 Green Mountain Valley at 10 a.m. The Gumbies improved to 5-2-3 by ousting Stratton on Wednesday, 3-0. The teams did not meet this fall. The 11-4 Eagles will host another 11-4 squad, Mill River, which toppled No. 11 Hartford on Wednesday, 3-0. Those teams also did not face one another this season. The winners of those games will meet on Wednesday at 3 p.m. in a game hosted by the higher seed.

The Tigers on Wednesday defeated visiting No. 15 Springfield, 4-0, but the Cosmos gave the Tigers a battle in a scoreless first half. But MUHS took control after the break with sharp ball movement and did not allow a shot at goal in the second half. Katie Holmes found the left corner from outside the box to give the Tigers the lead, and Hannah Buttolph made it 2-0 by tucking a Claire Armstrong serve from the right side inside the far post. Defender Marvie Avery’s high shot from long range following a corner kick made it 3-0, and Faith Isham finished the scoring with a blast from the right side of the box. Tiger goalie Molly Campbell made one save in about 46 minutes, and Riley Fenster finished up. Springfield keeper Grace Morvan made 18 saves.

In Bristol, the Eagle defense did not allow a shot on their two goalies, Zoe Cassels-Brown and Kamille Snell, and gradually pulled away from the visiting Commodores, who finished 3-12. Juniper Nardiello Smith put the Eagles on the board at 24:57 of the first half, and Ernesta McIntosh scored twice in the second half to ice the win. Nardiello Smith set up McIntosh’s first goal at 19:40, and McIntosh drilled a penalty kick home at 28:45. The Eagles earned edges of 13-0 in shots and 11-2 in corners while forcing VUHS senior goalie K.C. Ambrose to make eight saves. Anya Sonwaldt also saw time in the VUHS goal.

In South Burlington, the 13-1 Rebels scored three times on the way to a 6-0 win over the Tigers. Goalie Wilder Perera stopped 13 shots as the Tigers ended their season at 2-12-1. One boys’ team remains active: VUHS, No. 9 in D-II, will take on No. 1 Rice (14-1) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The Commodores improved to 5-7-3 by knocking off No. 8 Lamoille on Tuesday, 3-0.
