MIDDLEBURY — The 2014 Middlebury Arts Walk season continues with the season’s fifth, and second to last, event taking place on Friday, Sept. 12, from 5 to 7 p.m. Middlebury Arts Walk is a free event (for artists, venues, and attendees) and is held the second Friday of the month from May to October. In many cases the art is on display all month long.

Exhibit Openings

Several new exhibits/shows celebrate will host opening receptions on Sept. 12:

•  Carol’s Hungry Mind, 24 Merchants Row, will host a reception from 5:45 to 7 p.m. featuring an exhibit by Timothy Case titled “Space and Place: Large-Scale Panoramas.”

•  The Jackson Gallery at Town Hall Theater welcomes the opening of “Passing Through,” which features life-size oil paintings by local artist Kate Gridley. Ten paintings will be on display at the Jackson Gallery and seven will be on display at Middlebury College’s Mahaney Center for the Arts. The opening reception runs from 5 to 7 p.m.

•  Zone Three Gallery, West Ridge Office Building in the Marble Works, third floor, will highlight paintings by Katie Grauer. The exhibit is entitled “Images” and the opening reception (5 to 7 p.m.) will also feature poetry readings by Ryan Walsh and Kerrin McCadden.

•  Edgewater Gallery, 1 Mill St., will host an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. to celebrate the opening of TJ Cunningham’s new show, “Icons of the Valley.” Cunningham is a local artist, primarily a landscape painter, and this show focuses on farms — many of them in the Champlain Valley.

•  Henry Sheldon Museum, 1 Park St., will host an opening reception for its new exhibit, “Arthur Healy & His Students.” The exhibit highlights a range of watercolor paintings of horse racing, hunting, Ireland, and Vermont by Arthur Healy (1902-1978), Middlebury College’s esteemed art professor, together with works by nine alumni who studied under him and went on to distinguished careers in the arts.

Author and Poetry Readings

There are also a handful of venues that are offering readings from their recent books or poems:

•  Otter Creek Used Books, 99 Maple St., Marble Works, will host actress Laurel Casey as “Dr. L.H. Casey, Etymologist, Sociolinguist.” She is the author of the best-selling “Open Mouth, Insert Foot.”

•  Zone Three Gallery, West Ridge Office Building in the Marble Works, 3rd floor, will host poetry readings by Ryan Walsh and Kerrin McCadden.

•  In Frog Hollow Alley Alice Eckles will read from her latest work, “Literature Preferred by Wild Boar” at 4:30, 6 and 7 p.m.

About Middlebury Arts Walk

Now in its sixth season, Middlebury Arts Walk takes place on the second Friday of the month, May through October, from 5 to 7 p.m. In many cases the art is on display all month long — not just on the second Friday. All exhibits are free and Arts Walk is a family-friendly event. Middlebury Arts Walk occupies many locations each month including artists’ galleries, stores, professional offices and museums. In addition, musicians perform in the town’s outdoor parks whenever possible and weather permitting. The range of work on view includes paintings, photography, performances and crafts.
