MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received multiple reports of car break-ins in the Twin Circles, Woodland Park and North Pleasant Street neighborhoods on July 7. The culprit(s) targeted unlocked vehicle and stole a variety of items, including iPods, loose change, cameras, a GPS unit, a cell phone and a purse, according to police. Anyone with information on the thefts should call Middlebury police at 388-3191. Authorities are reminding people to always lock their vehicles and to not leave any valuables within plain sight.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Responded to a report of a potentially sick/rabid cat in the North Pleasant Street area on July 13. Police determined the cat to be fine and released it.

•  Warned a pet owner about leaving a dog locked in a vehicle parked off South Main Street for around an hour on July 13.

•  Assisted Middlebury College campus security with a “mentally unstable” woman who had been on campus screaming into her cell phone on July 13.

•  Took, to the Marble Valley Correctional Center for detox, a drunken man found walking on Main Street on July 13.

•  Responded to a verbal dispute between two men on North Pleasant Street on July 12.

•  Assisted a local woman who reported unauthorized charges on her debit card on July 12.

•  Assisted Vermont State Police with a burglary report on Munger Street on July 12.

•  Investigated a report of gun shots in the Mead Lane area on July 11. Police found no evidence of such activity.

•  Warned a person to stop sending harassing text messages to a Woodland Park resident on July 11.

•  Helped calm a dispute between some North Pleasant Street neighbors on July 10.

•  Turned over, to a sober party, an intoxicated person who had wandered into the woods off Washington Street Extension on July 10. Police said they eventually located the man sitting in a field with a bottle of rum and a stun gun.

•  Assisted Vermont State Police in trying to locate a suicidal woman in the Mill Street area on July 10.

•  Contacted Middlebury College Public Safety to take care of one of the institution’s summer program workers who was seen staggering on College Street on July 10.

•  Responded to an illegal dumping report on Evergreen Lane on July 9.

•  Investigated a two-vehicle crash, with no injuries, on Court Street Extension on July 9.

•  Investigated an alleged assault that occurred on Merchants Row on July 9. The investigation is ongoing.

•  Assisted a South Street resident who reported receiving unwanted text messages on July 9.

•  Responded to an unlawful trespassing complaint at a Weybridge Street residence on July 9.

•  Investigated a report of a man allegedly attempting to pull a woman out of a car that had parked in the driveway of a Seminary Street residence on July 9. Police said they were unable to locate the vehicle.

•  Issued court diversion paperwork to two juveniles who were in possession of alcohol in the Munger Street area on July 9.

•  Responded to the report of a tree down on wires on High Street on July 8. Middlebury firefighters removed the tree from the roadway and put out the fire.

•  Responded to the report of a tree down on North Pleasant Street on July 8. An officer was able to remove the tree from the roadway.

•  Responded to a reported argument between two people on Valley View Road on July 8.

•  Assisted a Court Street woman who said her son was trying to get into her home on July 8 after having been asked to leave. The son said he was knocking on the door looking for items that his mother had not thrown onto the porch earlier.

•  Served a temporary restraining order on a local man on July 8.

•  Heard from a Valley View resident on July 8 who said someone had stolen some items from his unlocked vehicle on July 6.

•  Cited Derek Eaton, 20, of South Carolina, for retail theft, after he allegedly stole an FM transmitter from the Middlebury Short Stop on Court Street Extension on July 8.

•  Received into evidence a used syringe that a Colonial Drive resident had found while doing yard work on July 8.

•  Helped defuse a family dispute at a Court Street residence on July 8. An officer stood by until one of the parties had moved out of the residence, according to police.

•  Received, from a Good Samaritan, a purse he had found off Mill Street on July 8. Police returned the purse to its owner.
