Scrum, ruck and maul

RUGBY MAY NOT be completely understood by the average sports fan, but that doesn’t diminish the level of excitement generated by the rough and tumble play. The Middlebury College Rugby Club (MCRC) generated a lot of that excitement when it opened its season Saturday afternoon. The team won the Division II national championship in 2007 and 2009 and this season moved up to Division I. The season-opening loss to UMass-Amherst featured five lead changes and a last second effort by Middlebury that came just five meters short of victory.
