I spent much of this week pulling together information for a two-part set of articles about slaughterhouses in Vermont, which you can read here and here.
So my radar perked up when a press release from the Vermont Agency of Agriculture hit our inbox at the newspaper this morning. In a statement from Secretary Roger Allbee, the agency announced that the USDA and the Vermont Agency of Agriculture today suspended their licenses for operations at the Bushways Slaughterhouse facility in Grand Isle, Vt., due to alleged animal welfare violations. The allegations came from the Humane Society of the United States. Here's part of Allbee's announcement:
“USDA and the state have suspended the operation of the facility and are conducting an investigation. These allegations of inhumane handling and treatment of animals if verified, warrant prompt corrective actions to ensure they do not happen again.
“In addition, in accordance with agency animal health statutes, the Attorney General has been notified of possible criminal actions in regards to animal health and welfare.
“The agency finds the alleged animal welfare practices disturbing and states that there is no excuse for the inhumane treatment of animals. These practices are not representative of the industry as a whole in Vermont and such actions will not be tolerated in our state. The agency is taking every action within its power to address the situation.”
I didn't speak with anyone from Bushway's while reporting my articles, but the slaughterhouse processes a number of calves for veal from Vermont dairy farms. As far as I know, it was the only plant of its kind slaughtering these animals in the state.
Update, 4:10 p.m.: The HSUS has posted more information online about its undercover investigation at the Grand Isle slaughterhouse. The HSUS alleges that workers at the slaughterhouse abused calves, skinned one alive, repeatedly shocked calves who "seemed weak and unable to stand." You can read more over at the Humane Society's Web site, but be warned — many of the photos and video footage are graphic.

Beware that the HSUS is not your local humane society. They are not humane at all. Rather they are a big money international lobbying group pushing a vegan agenda , attempting to destroy farms, and prevent people from having pets or any interaction with animals. This is the same as PETA and their more violent terrorist branches like ALF.
While the Bushway plant has serious issues that need addressing it is not nearly as bad as HSUS would like you to believe. HSUS used selective reporting to lie to you and missrepresented Dr. Temple Grandin & Vogel's letter. Reading the original letter finds a different story.
Remember, HSUS is your enemy and the enemy of all farm animals and farmers. Do not fall for their lies.
The inherent inhumanity of commercial farming practices

While I agree that some HSUS executives make far too much money, PETA and most other animal welfare agencies work for relatively litte. They, like most of us who detest the way commercial farms "raise", transport and slaughter animals ( often with unimaginable cruelty), do strive to convince people to stop supporting such cruelty by adopting a vegetarian diet. Converting the despicable commercial poultry, hog, beef, veal, duck, sheep, lamb and other such farms to smaller, free range and mostly vegetarian farming practices would not only be kinder for the animals, but provide a safer, healther diet for humans. It would also reduce the environmental pollution of current commercial farming practices. When I watch the endless lines of obese men and women waddling to the meat counters to fill their food carts with cut up pieces of animals, high fat milk and cheese, etc. then read articles on the need for better health care for these obese wretches .. with their high blood pressure, diabetes, heart problems, etc.., l am infuriated. There is so much misery inflicted on farm animals, from birth to death, so that people can gorge on veal smothered in sauce, "burgers", chicken, pork, lamb, duck, turkeys, high fat milk products, etc. The poor calves depicted in the video were the product of dairy farms that consider them just a by- product of their milk cows, which are forced to give birth year after year so that the milk intended for their calves can be sold to humans. Once they are used up, the milk cows will also be discarded ... sent to slaughter. The whole business is obscene ... but could not continue without demand. People need to remember those pitiful veal calves the next time they reach for a piece of a once sentient creature to put in their mouths and, then, adopt a healthier, more humane diet.

I love how you comment is completely relevant to the article. HSUS provides evidence of brutal animal abuse that eventually close the facility down and you consider HSUS as a fake? Consider this as a lie???
LOL. Wow.... obviously a slaughterhouse worker spooked crapless as to how much your dirty industry is being exposed.
The user above is 100% correct - many people whom abuse animals also do the same to humans.
Obviously you are one of them.

What is wrong with a vegan agenda? At least animals are protected from acts of inhumane cruelty. You are the one who has the bad karma of eating animals that are unjustly tortured.
Maybe you should be kicked around and shocked until you WAKE up that this is not farming... this is group of men that should be not only ashamed, but prosecuted!
I am spreading this information to ALL I know in hopes that the slaughterhouse NEVER reopens.

There may be extremist agendas with some of the animal rights organizations but lets be thankful that someone is taking on the miserable job of monitoring slaughter houses. Obviously the USDA is not monitoring well enough and this inspector should be fired. But the real folks that are destroying farms are the folks who are running and managing plants like Bushway's. What was the owner thinking to allow such treatment? What do the dairy farmers who take such care in raising their livestock think about being represented to the public in this way by a member of their own agriculture community? The farming community needs to be alarmed, not by organizations such as HSUS but by members of their own extended industry. Gain the publics respect by acting respectfully. Take a stand and voice your disgust for this and don't be supporting a business that puts your livelihood to shame. You deserve much better.

We're being had. HSUS' illicit videos are taken undercover because they can't stand the light of day. They are often voiced over, edited and received from PETA. Edited video is neither proof nor disproof of anything. Anything can be edited in such as after hours shots taken during plant closure, etc. How many are aware HSUS has been party to multiple nation global trade talks on how to "move meat and poultry production" to particularly Pacific Rim Nations and especially China? We are putting at peril our US job security, food security, the already rotten economy, health security (many meds and vaccines are derived from animals), and national security by elevating this nefarious organization of HSUS to credibility. Instead of letting HSUS be used to move our meat production out of the US, wipe out our meat processing facilities, and destroy our farmers--let's wake up and take out HSUS! HSUS is not about animal cruelty. It is very much about unbelievably enormous amounts of money.

Please provide us proof as to how this article is fake and just a scam. The only way to expose the acts of brutal heartless animal abuse is with undercover activity. You whip out a camera infront of them they'll barely touch the animals. It's funny you miss that fact.
Yes, they have to make money to do what they do... sorry... legislation, campaigns, and getting the truth out there is NOT cheap.
Your lack of intelligence is hilarious, though, to relieve yourself from this stance - provide us with proof this article is fake.

Would you like to have your throat partially slit and continue to be skinned alive to save our tainted meat production?
I'm sure HSUS is receiving an 'unbelievably enormous amounts of money' from exposing these inhumane savages.. Maybe you should rethink that statement.
If you want to address an issue, please address both sides. This abuse and torture is happening, whether your ignorance allows you to understand it or not.
It is quite disappointing to think that our meat production could be outsourced.. maybe we should consider doing it correctly the first time then.

HSUS has nothing to do with animal welfare. It has everything to do with their own agenda and raising money. If they were truly about animal welfare, then there would be some sort of solution, some sort of response, some sort of alternative, realistic alternative, besides just shutting down a facility that is a crucial part of the infrastructure Vermont is reliant on - and not just dairy farm families, but their communities, their economic viability.

Getting food to your table is one thing, treating a defenseless "baby animal" let alone ANY animal the way these calves were treated is absolutely unacceptable and can only be carried out by a cold hearted monster. The only worse people out there are the ones who do this type of thing to children. Believe me, the people at the center of this are not far from that. Caution.

I wish that we, the people, had the same leverage as HSUS because then we could make them go away. I have no idea whether or not Bushway's was abusing animals, but I have to say that my cow-plop radar when off the chart when I saw HSUS in the articles I read. To HSUS any animal killing is inhumane, that is the problem. They have no idea about the truth of where animals fit into the food chain, in fact they'd prefer that animals weren't a part of the food chain at all. Too bad, also, Allbee buckled to HSUS's pressure.

Only someone who condones extreme cruelty would write such a comment. Any decent person who watches the video - vegetarian or not - of how these calves were cruelly treated will not think that such conduct has any place in the "food chain."

I agree! Anyone who would condone such treatment of animals is a moron! Even if these animals are being slaughtered, while they are alive they have the right to be treated humanely. Animal abuse is rampant and needs to be stopped. For those that abused those poor calves, you need to have the same treatment done to you. See how you like it, you worthless pieces of CRAP!
Punishment
October 31, 2009 by Guest, 14 weeks 2 days ago
Comment id: 1841
I agree! These unhumans need to have some shock treatment in water with broken legs so they can't get away. I truly feel that that would be fair punishment. It is only fair that they feel the same suffering they have inflicted to the countless animals who've endured this torture.
To be constructive.... write to the government, the beef growers associations and who ever is supposed to be the governing body that is supposed to keep this from happening.
Also support HSUS, if it wasn't for them this torture would have continued.
Can these people on the video be charged and convicted? That would be the next step.

I have animals and will never treat them humanely, root word here is human. I will treat them properly. I watched the video and decided they weren't all being treated properly. That said, fine the place. They talk about being "covered in diarrhea" well work around cows long enough and you will find its not uncommon.
I too am put off often by the HSUS and other radical branches of such like organizations. Sometimes they do serve a purpose.. But to shut a place down because of 2 people. That is silly. Now the calves that were to go here will be shot and composted. What a waste. Nobody wins in this case. Not the company, farmer, or the calves.
Food for thought. animals are not humans and should never be elevated to such standards.
Food for thought.

Maybe we should try elevating these savage humans to such standards, because they are obviously not at a humane level. Most animals behave more appropriately and have better morals than our 'human' race. You have obviously elevated yourself to this standard without assessing your character.

If you think that it makes it OK just because it was only 2 people - you are crazy! If this happened ONE time, that person should be convicted, plain and simple. This happens everywhere, thousands of times a week. Does that make it OK? Maybe you should apply for a job at a slaughterhouse, sounds like you are cold and heartless, just what they are looking for.
I don't understand
October 30, 2009 by Guest, 14 weeks 2 days ago
Comment id: 1838
why anyone who thinks animals should be treated fairly is "elevating" them to humans. If anything, the animals are better because they are incapable of inflicting cruelty on each other. We on the other hand, we mistreat everything, including other people.
Regardless of your feelings on eating meat, you can't argue with the fact that animals feel fear and pain and they don't deserve it. And to think that this doesn't happen at every slaughterhouse is extremely naive as well. These people just got caught. You have to be cold hearted to even do that job to begin with, so extra cruelty is probably nothing to them.
