Patrick Henry Liberty

WESTFORD — Patrick Henry Liberty, 78, of Westford, died on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008, at Northwestern Medical Center Hospital in St. Albans following a courageous battle with cancer and heart disease.

He was born in Starksboro on April 18, 1930, the son of the late Earl and Mary (Wright) Liberty. He married Marguerite Culver on Jan. 15, 1956, in Starksboro.

His family says he was an outdoorsman who loved horses and chickens, four-wheeling, hunting and snowmobiles.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Marguerite; two sons, Ricky and wife Brenda of Fair Haven and Ronald of Fair Haven, former daughter-in-law, Lisa, daughter Anne of Winooski; three grandchildren, including Patrick of Westford, who was raised by his grandparents; a great-grandchild who will be born in July 2009; a brother, Barnet of Huntington; a sister, Elizabeth Peno and husband Reginald of Vergennes; sister-in-law, Nina Liberty of St. Albans; and many nieces, nephews and many friends.

He was predeceased by his parents, a sister, Lillian, and two brothers, Elenzer and Harold.

A memorial service will be held at the Red Brick Meeting Church in Westford at noon on Jan. 10. Burial will be private. Donations may be sent to Mrs. Marguerite Liberty, 694 Woods Hollow Road, Westford, VT 05494.


Edward Raymond Grant Jr.

LIBBY, Mont. — Edward Raymond Grant Jr., 61, of Libby, Mont., died unexpectedly on Dec. 29, 2008.

He was born in Hancock on June 15, 1947, the son of Edward and Helen (Faivre) Grant. He lived in East Middlebury for many years and attended local schools. He spent the last few years living in Libby.

Family says he had a great sense of adventure and loved to travel. He loved the outdoors, especially the East Middlebury Gorge, where as a young boy he had often dived from the top of the bridge into the river. He loved time spent with his family, music and playing his guitar and making up songs as he went.

He is survived by three sons, Shane, Franklin and Cole, all of Burlington; one daughter, Penny of Haughton, La.; six grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Grant and wife Connie of East Middlebury and John Grant of East Middlebury; four sisters, Nancy Baumgartner and husband Charles of East Middlebury, Marie Nazworthy and husband Jerry of Huntersville, N.C., Marjorie Webb and husband Lyle of Shoreham, and Patricia Chamberlain and husband Thomas of Bristol; and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, Edward and Helen Grant.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.


Doris B. Gilmond

FERRISBURGH/GEORGIA, Vt. — Doris B. Gilmond, 85, a longtime resident of Ferrisburgh, died peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Redstone Villa in St. Albans.

Doris was born in Flint, Mich., on Oct. 26, 1923, the daughter of Lucien and Zelma (Blondin) Dupree, and was educated at Winooski schools.

She was formerly employed at the American Woolen Mill, General Electric Co. and Simmonds Precision.

Doris was a founding member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and enjoyed card playing.

She is survived by a daughter, Carmelita Kirby; a daughter-in-law, Olive Gilmond; two sons, Gary Gilmond and Theresa Fitzgerald and Craig Gilmond and his wife Diane “Chickie”; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Doris was predeceased by a son, Allston Gilmond Jr.; a granddaughter, Elizabeth Ann; a brother, Roger Dupree; and two sisters, Janet Priest and Pauline O’Grady.

Doris’ family wishes to thank Dr. Shulman and Redstone Villa and staff for the excellent care the past two years.

Visiting hours will be on Friday, Jan. 9, 2009, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with a prayer service beginning at 1 p.m. at the LaVigne Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 132 Main St. in Winooski. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 121 Connor Way, Williston, VT 05495.


Lucille (Lucy) Cousino

BRISTOL/VERGENNES — Lucille (Lucy) Cousino, 80, died Saturday, Jan. 3, 2009, at the home of Carl and Sue LaBerge in Vergennes, surrounded by her family.

She was born June 27, 1928, in Middlebury, the daughter of Philip and Clara (Danyew) Forrest.

She was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Bristol, the Bristol American Legion Auxiliary and the VFW Auxiliary in Middlebury.

She is survived by five children, Ronald Cousino and wife Bethany of Brandon; Marilyn Napoleon and husband Fred of New Haven; Alan Cousino and Kelly Bliss of Essex Junction; Thomas Cousino and wife Pamela Simpers of Malletts Bay; Christopher Cousino and wife Patricia of Vergennes; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ruth Jacobs of Middlebury and Teresa Churchill and husband Raymond of Middlebury; two brothers, Philip Forrest and Francis Forrest, both of Middlebury; a sister-in-law, Doris Cousino of South Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Benjamin Frank Cousino, on May 3, 1997, and by two sisters and three brothers.

A Mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Wednesday, Jan. 7, with interment in Mount St. Joseph Cemetery in Bristol. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 121 Connor Way, Williston, VT 05495.


William Henry Burke

ORWELL — William Henry Burke, 86, died Monday Jan. 5, 2009, in Orwell.

He was born in Benson on Dec. 21, 1922, the son of Arthur and Mary (LaPine) Burke. He grew up on his family’s farm and attended school in Benson.

A farmer all of his life, he worked for 40 years at Arnolds farm in Orwell, where he worked at the dairy farm, the sawmill and the milk hauling business until his retirement in 1990. He was a member of St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Orwell.

 He is survived by his nephew and caregiver, Art Bell and wife Irene, and his niece, Betty Walker, all of Orwell, as well as many other nieces, nephews and cousins.

Besides his parents, William was predeceased by four brothers, Frances, James, Joseph and Theodore Burke; and four sisters, Mary Tuliper, Elizabeth Ballard, Beatrice Bartholomew and Helen Bell.

 Funeral services were held at noon on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor at St. Mary Church in Brandon, officiated.

Graveside committal services and interment will be in St. Paul’s Catholic Cemetery in Orwell at a later date. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Orwell First Response.


Robert E. Anderson

FERRISBURGH — Robert E. Anderson, 69, died on Friday, Jan. 2, 2009, at Porter Hospital, following complications from cardiac surgery.

He was born in Burlington on Oct. 23, 1939, the son of Charles and Ellen (Beaman) Anderson. He was a graduate of Vergennes High School. Robert served eight years in the Vermont Army National Guard. On May 12, 1961, he married Bess Phoebus.

Robert was a farmer for 35 years. He was a former Grand Master for the state of Vermont of the International Order of Odd Fellows and was a member in good standing of the American Legion.

He is survived by his wife Bess of Ferrisburgh; his son, Robert J. Anderson of Mariemont, Ohio; his daughter, Jennifer Sanford and her husband Ben of Durham, N.C.; four grandchildren, Rachel and Aurora Anderson and Nathanial and Charlotte Sanford; four sisters, Rosamond Anderson, Gladys (Betty) Allen, Shirley Flannery and Beverly Caldwell; and two brothers, William and Edward Anderson.

He was predeceased by his brother Frank Anderson and sister Virginia Chicoine.

A memorial service will be held at the convenience of the family.
