Cary Armstrong Rothe

HANOVER, N.H. — Cary Armstrong Rothe, 64, of Hanover, N.H., died on Sept. 9, 2008, at home of glucagonoma, a rare cancer. She was born Oct. 17, 1943, in New York City to James and Carol Armstrong of Wells, Maine, and Hanover, N.H.

She lived in Princeton, N.J.; Rome, Italy; Middlebury; Norwich; and Hanover, N.H. A 1961 graduate of Miss Fine’s School in Princeton, N.J., Cary earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in art history at Bryn Mawr College and performed her graduate studies at the University of North Carolina.

She married Roth Tall of Middlebury in 1969, and they divorced in 1982. She moved to Norwich, where she raised her twin sons, Chris and Jamie Tall. She met Paul Rothe on March 20, 1993, and they married on Aug. 19, 2000, in Hanover, N.H.

She painted portraits, landscapes and abstracts in various media. Her commissioned works grace numerous local homes. Friends report that, as a photographer, she was pleased when someone saw first the formal structure, color and flow of energy in a work and then later discovered the subject.

She was a fine arts instructor at Middlebury College and assistant curator of the Johnson Art Gallery. For 20 years, she served the Upper Valley professionally in human resources.

According to family she naturally found ways to put others before herself and found joy in being outgoing to everyone she met, both professionally and personally. As a manager, she specialized in starting human resource departments at established firms, most recently the Hanover Food Coop.

She is survived by her husband; her parents; her brother, James Armstrong Jr. of Williamsburg, N.C.; her sister, Elizabeth Lofgren of Lewisburg, Pa.; and her sons of Wisconsin and New York.

She was predeceased by her son, David Tall.

Her life will be celebrated at a later date near her birthday.
