Christine Lurk Brush

LEICESTER — Christine Lurk Brush, 91, died Dec. 12, 2007, at Helen Porter Nursing Home in Middlebury, following a short illness. She was born Sept. 14, 1916, in West Lebanon, N.H., the daughter of Henry, of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Elva (Warren) Lurk of Stowe.

She attended schools in West Lebanon, N.H., and West Hartford, Conn. Following high school, she worked for 11 years at the Aetna Life Insurance Co. in Hartford, Conn. She met her husband, Donald C. Brush of Leicester, in Hartford where he was employed by Pratt and Whitney during the war. They were married on July 18, 1942.

They moved first to Burlington and then to Leicester, where she has resided for the past 61 years. She worked briefly as secretary to the dean of women at Middlebury College. She was the chairman of the Leicester school board for many years including the transition from five one room schoolhouses to the building of the Leicester Central School. She was honored for her work by the Vermont Department of Education.

She was an active member of the Brandon Garden Club, Leicester Homemakers Club, Lake Dunmore Sailing Club, Fern Lake/Lake Dunmore Association and the Brandon Bone Builders.

According to family, she enjoyed homemaking, cooking, reading, singing and many outdoor activities with her family including swimming, sailing, skating, cross country and downhill skiing, gardening, campfires and parties. She went iceboating with her son up to age 89.

She is survived by a son, Donald C. Brush Jr. of Leicester; a daughter, Katherine Dick and her husband, John of Salisbury; three grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. A great-grandson is expected in April.

She was predeceased by her husband of 56 years in 1998; a grandson in 2001; and two sisters, Helen Lurk and Lurana McCray.

A memorial service will be held at the Leicester Meeting House at the four corners on Route 7 on Saturday, Dec. 29, at 10 a.m. The family will welcome friends at John and Kathy Dick’s home at 391 Rogers Road in Salisbury following the service.

Burial will be private at the family camp on Lake Dunmore.
